I'm always amazed at how much I can fit into my luggage when traveling. However, I've never considered the idea that I could fit some 1500 turtles in my suitcase. Seems that Filipino customs officials found four suitcases left in the arrivals area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport near Manila on Sunday that had more than 1,500 live exotic turtles stuffed inside. The 1,529 turtles were turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Wildlife Traffic Monitoring unit and are said to be doing well. In the Philippines, convicted wildlife smugglers can face prison time of up to two years and a fine of up to $3850. This also seems to be something that happens a lot. Last year a total of 560 wildlife and endangered species, including 250 geckos and 254 corals smuggled through air parcels, baggage and shipments.
