A Canadian man has figured out how to get cheaper auto insurance, and all he had to do was change his gender -- or at least say he did.
The 23-year-old, identified only as "David," recently purchased a new car and was given a quote on insurance which seemed high to him. Out of curiosity, he asked how much the same policy would cost him if he was a woman -- and the quote was more than a thousand dollars less. That's all he needed to hear.
He tells the CBC, "I have taken advantage of a loophole." He was able to get a doctor to write a note saying that he identifies as a woman and then used that note to change his gender on his birth certificate. He explains, "I just basically asked for it and told them that I identify as a woman, or I'd like to identify as a woman, and he wrote me the letter I wanted."
David insists that his intention is not to "ridicule transgender or LGBT rights." He just wanted to pay less for auto insurance.
