'Life-Threatening' Waves Warning Issued Along Lake Michigan

The National Weather Service has issued a 'beach hazard statement' that will remain in effect until late Wednesday night, September 1.

The hazard statement is a warning for the "life-threatening waves of 3 to 5 feet." There are also dangerous currents to be expected. The counties affected by the dangerous swimming conditions are Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha.

The warning statement notes that several beaches will be affected, including Grant Park Beach in Milwaukee, North Beach and Wind Point Lighthouse Beach in Racine and Simmons Island Beach in Kenosha.

The warning says:

"Stay out of the water and away from dangerous areas like piers and breakwalls. Strong structural and longshore currents are expected. Rip currents are possible."

Going into the holiday weekend, the NWS states on their website that a "Recreational Beach Forecast" for southeast Wisconsin beaches on Lake Michigan will be issued daily by 5 a.m. CT. In addition, another forecast is expected to go out at 5 p.m. CT daily for the following day. This will allow those planning for a beach day to prepare ahead of time for any potential dangers they might encounter.
